  • What is a Secured Credit Card?

A Secured Credit Card is an invaluable tool used to help establish healthy credit.

  • How does a Secured Card differ from an Unsecured one?

A Secured Visa Card functions the same way as a traditional credit card but requires a refundable deposit equal to the Card’s Credit Limit. Those funds are then used to pay the transactional charge(s) conducted using the Credit Card. The funds are replenished (minus applicable charges) when you make your monthly payment.

  • Does a Secured Card have the same Credit Limits as an Unsecured?

No. Because the card is backed/financed by the amounts of funds on deposit (in a member’s account), credit limits are usually significantly lower than an Unsecured Visa. This allows the cardholder to regulate/monitor his/her/their spending habits while learning how to properly manage their finances.

  • How do you determine a member’s Secured Card’s credit limit?

A member’s credit limit is not determined by their credit score or history, but rather the amount of their security deposit – ranging from a minimum of $500 up to a maximum limit of $2,000.

  • When will my credit card become unsecured, and my security deposit returned?

We will periodically evaluate your credit history and automatically convert your credit card into a traditional, unsecured card upon qualification. You may also apply to have your account unsecured at any time.

  • Why should someone consider applying for Secured Visa?

Although the credit line is “financed” by the funds on deposit, creditors are required to report secured credit card accounts’ status and usage to the various Credit Bureaus. Which means, when you use your Visa Secured Card for everyday purposes and pay your bill on time, your credit score (i.e., FICO) will improve over time. Other payment methods such as prepaid debit or gift cards are not regulated in the same manner and could negatively impact your score if regularly used as your primary payment source.

  • Is a credit check required to apply for a Secured Visa?

Yes. There are certain qualifications a cardholder must meet in order to be approved for a Secured Visa. For example, if you recently declared bankruptcy, you must have it discharged before we can consider your application.

  • Are there other things I should know about before I apply?

Yes. You must be at least 18 years of age to apply for a credit card and be able to provide proof of income. If you currently have open collection accounts, it is recommended to pay those off before submitting an application for credit.

  • Adding an Authorized User
Adding an authorized user to your credit card is simple. Start by logging into Digital Banking, click on the Card Manager widget, and request to add an authorized user. That’s it! You can also give us a call at 888-800-3328 and we’d be happy to help.
