First Entertainment Credit Union Encourages Southern Californians to Include Financial Preparedness in El Niño Planning

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (September 24, 2026) – First Entertainment Credit Union is encouraging Southern Californians to make financial readiness a part of their planning following Gavin Newsom’s declaration of a statewide state of emergency ahead of what forecasters expect could be a historically strong El Niño season.

“When people think about emergency preparedness, they often focus on protecting their homes and families, which is incredibly important,” said Stephen Owen, president and CEO of First Entertainment Credit Union. “But it’s also important to consider the financial side of unexpected events. Reviewing and understanding your financial options before an emergency occurs can provide greater flexibility when challenges arise.”

To help consumers prepare, First Entertainment recommends the following:

  • Consider setting aside dedicated emergency funds to help cover possible income disruptions, vehicle repairs, home repairs or other storm related costs.
  • Create a household emergency plan that includes access to financial information and essential account contacts.
  • Review homeowner, renter and auto insurance policies and understand coverage limits, deductibles and claims procedures.
  • Keep copies of important financial, insurance and personal documents in a secure location and back them up digitally whenever possible.
  • Check that online and mobile banking access is up to date and account alerts are enabled.

“Preparedness is about creating options,” said Owen. “The steps you take today can make a meaningful difference if circumstances change tomorrow.”

For those looking to strengthen their financial readiness, First Entertainment provides practical guidance and educational resources, including How to Prepare Your Finances for California’s Predicted El Niño Winter, which offers strategies for preparing for unexpected expenses. These tips can help individuals and families strengthen their financial resilience and prepare throughout the year.

In addition to educational content, First Entertainment also connects members with resources that can help them better understand insurance options and make informed decisions about their coverage needs.

“No one knows exactly what this winter will bring,” said Owen. “But access to trusted financial guidance can help people feel more prepared to navigate whatever comes next.”
