Keep Your Car Summer-Proof

Keep Your Car Summer Proof

A well-maintained and covered vehicle could be the key to your summer fun.

The summer months can be hard on your car—potentially leading to costly repairs or even a breakdown. We’ve gathered six tips to help you keep your wheels in good working order so you can save money and enjoy your summer.

Check Your Wiper Blades

The hot sun can eat away at your wiper blades, leaving you in a jam the next time you need to clean your windshield when you’re on the go. Check your wiper blades for damage, and if it’s been more than a year since you last replaced them it’s probably time to pick up a new set. You can often save a few dollars by purchasing them at your local big box store.

Top Up Your Fluids

Pop your car’s hood and make sure that your coolant, power steering fluid, transmission fluid, and windshield wiper fluid are all at the correct levels. The heat of the summer months can cause some fluids to evaporate, and with your engine working hard to run the car plus your A/C you could unwittingly do damage if your fluid levels dip too low.

Get an Oil Change

Most cars need oil changes every 5,000 miles to keep the engine in good working order. If you don’t already, it’s a good idea to keep a log of your car’s maintenance in your glove box so you can replace your oil and filter at the correct intervals. Check to see how many miles you’ve driven since your last change and be sure to schedule a change (or buy the materials needed to do it yourself) soon.

Clean Your Vents and Replace Your Filters

Your A/C will probably be working overtime this summer, so give your car a break by making sure your system is as clean as possible. Check your car’s manual to determine the location of your filter(s) and see if they need to be changed, then use a microfiber rag or dust cleaning cloth to gently wipe the vents to remove any dust or grit that may have built up.

Check Your Tires

While many cars come with a low tire pressure sensor, it’s important to perform a manual check of the pressure and tread, and consider rotating your tires at your next oil change. The state of your tires has a major impact on the efficiency of your car, and a blowout at the wrong time could lead to an accident.

Review Your Insurance

Protecting your investment in your vehicle—be it a car, truck, SUV, or a specialized vehicle—requires the right insurance at the right rate. Summer is a great time to review your current coverage and see if there are opportunities for you to save.
